Screening of Documentary and Panel Discussion on VAW December 2009: An event titled ‘16 Days and Beyond….’ to commemorate the end of the 16 Days of Activism on Eliminating Violence against Women, was organized by the project on 9 December 2009 in Islamabad. The event featured screening of a documentary "Bushra Survives" by the Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF), one of the implementing partners of GJP, followed by a panel discussion on VAW. Mr. Toshihiro Tanaka, Country Director UNDP and Mr. Mr. George Turkington, Head of the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) were the chief guests for the occasion. The eminent panelist for the event included: (i) Ms. Saba Gul Khattak, Member Social Sectors, Planning Commission; (ii) Ms. Marvi Memon, Member National Assembly; (iii) Dr. Farzana Bari, Head of Gender Studies, QAU University; (iv) Dr. Rakshinda Parveen, social activist; (v) Ms. Samar Minallah, human rights activist and documentary film maker; (vi) Ms. Valerie Khan Yusufazi, Chair of Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF); and (vii) Mr. Salman Asif, Gender Advisor, UNDP. A large number of stakeholders also participated. The event concluded with a strong consensus that a concerted effort is needed in order to address the problem of violence against women in Pakistan. Panelists agreed that, “We need to take action on legislation, on empowering women to demand their rights, engaging men to promote gender equality, and change education curricula in schools and madrassahs to ensure that the future generation sees each other as equal in rights and dignity.”
Establishment of Anti-Karo Kari Cells within the Sindh Police Department The Sindh Police Department is working with GJP-UNDP on a project for “Prevention of Karo-Kari (Honour Killing)” in Sindh province. The Sukhur range/zone has been selected for the project which includes districts of Sukhur, Ghotki, Khairpur and Naushehro Feroze. The Sindh Police Department has established Anti-Karo Kari Cells within its structure and a Notification has been issued on the project, zone and district level appointments of focal persons.For more news and information on Violence Against Women (VAW), please visit the following links:
Good practices in legislation on Violence Against Women
The United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women recently issued a report, based on an expert group meeting, on “Good practices in legislation on violence against women”. The report provides guidelines and a model framework for legislation on violence against women, including detailed recommendations, commentaries and examples of good practices. The 70-page document also summarizes the prevailing approaches for addressing violence against women in different legal systems. The purpose of this report is to assist States and other stakeholders in enhancing existing, and developing new, legislation on violence against women. External Request for Proposals (Old)
The UN Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence against Women has launched its annual Call for Proposals (2009). The focus of this year’s Call is on closing the gap on the implementation of national and local laws, policies and action plans that address violence against women and girls. Civil society organizations, governments and UN Country Teams, in partnership with governments and civil society, are invited to submit applications of a maximum US$1 million for duration of up to three years. The deadline for application is April 17, 2009. The Fund for Global Human Rights seeks to increase the flow of financial resources to on-the-ground human rights organizations and to strengthen human rights movements and communities in countries around the world. This RFP invites proposals from human rights organizations based in Burundi, Guinea, Pakistan, and Uganda only. Currently the Fund makes grants to human rights organizations based in 16 countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The Fund aims to provide funding for human rights organizations over the longer term. To that end, a long-term focus is maintained on specific countries and regions where strategic grant-making can make a difference in advancing human rights protections over time. Grants will be for one year (July 2009 – June 2010) and may be renewed in 2010.
Grants will range from $5,000 to $30,000. Requests for grants above $30,000 will not be considered. First-time applicants are strongly encouraged to apply in the $5,000 to $15,000 range.
